Top White House officials took advantage of appearances on various television news magazines yesterday to justify a US strike on Iraq to bring an end Saddam Hussein’s reign of terror.

US National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice told “CNN Sunday Morning” that “Iraq has a history of lying about everything. This is not a regime that can be trusted. Now the fact that they attacked Israel during the Gulf War should tell us something. This is a regime that wants to blackmail us (the United States) because our interests clash… Eventually it will want to blackmail the entire international community. If we wait until that blackmail includes the ability to blackmail with nuclear weapons, we will have made a grave mistake.”

US Vice President Dick Cheney told NBC’s “Meet The Press” that the cost of military action (against Iraq) would be significantly less than having to deal with being hit with another attack similar in magnitude to September 11. At the same time, US Secretary Of State Colin Powell told “Fox News Sunday” that Iraq has been in violation of United Nations resolutions for years. Powell said that the best way to disarm Iraq is through a regime change.
