Minister of Intelligence Eli Cohen visited Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, on Monday and met senior Sudanese defense and intelligence officials, according to Barak Ravid of Walla! News.

This is the first visit by an Israeli minister to Sudan.

According to a report in Israel Hayom, Cohen headed a joint delegation of the Ministry of Intelligence and the National Security Council.

Cohen met with officials from the fields of defense and intelligence. During the visit, the Minister met with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, the country’s Minister of Defense, Yassin Ibrahim, and other senior members of the Sudanese government.

The delegation that returned to Israel on Monday evening included heads of divisions in the Ministry of Intelligence and the National Security Council, as well as officials from other government ministries who held working meetings with their Sudanese counterparts.

Sudan and Israel agreed to normalize ties in October. That agreement was announced days after then-US President Donald Trump officially removed Sudan from the list of nations that sponsor and finance terrorism.

Earlier this month, Sudan announced that it has officially joined the Abraham Accords, the US-sponsored treaty signed by the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain normalizing relations with Israel.
