(Updated Wednesday 9:30AM) US President George Bush will be meeting with congressional leaders today to voice his argument for overthrowing Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi regime. Yesterday, US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld denied that there was a split within the administration on the Iraqi issue. He said that such rumors were “baloney”.

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz told UN Secretary General Kofi at a meeting in Johannesburg yesterday, that his country was prepared to allow UN weapons inspectors back into Iraq under several conditions, including the lifting of the international embargo on his country. The White House voiced skepticism over Iraq’s willingness to cooperate.

Also yesterday, British Prime Minister reiterated his support for the US position on Iraq. He said that there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein must be dealt with. He added that “if the 11th of September teaches us anything, it teaches us the importance of not waiting for the threat to materialize.”
