The Capitol is on lockdown and the House and Senate in recess after protesters stormed the Capitol building.
A woman is reportedly in critical condition after being shot in the neck.
White House Spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said the National Guard is on its way to disperse the crowd.
Footage showed law enforcement with guns drawn in the building. Protesters have reportedly entered the House Chamber, with one yelling “Trump won the election” on the dais. They have also reportedly entered the Senate Chamber.
Some senators and congressmen have been evacuated, as has VP Pence.
A 6 pm curfew has been instituted in Washington DC.
In the meantime, President Trump tweeted regarding the congressional hearing to certify the Electoral College votes, criticizing VP Pence.
"Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. USA demands the truth!"
He called, however, to "stay peaceful."
"Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!"
U.S. Vice President Pence Wednesday said he doesn’t believe he has “unilateral authority” to decide between competing slates of electors.
“It is my considered judgment that my oath to support and defend the Constitution constrains me from claiming unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not,” Pence said in a statement released just before the joint session of Congress began.
