There were numerous attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers reported over the weekend throughout Yesha (Judea, Samaria, and Gaza). On Friday night, an Arab opened fire with automatic weapons on Jewish worshipers in Hevron as they walked from the Cave of the Patriarchs (Ma'arat HaMachpela) to the nearby town of Kiryat Arba. One woman broke her hand while dropping to the ground during the attack. Soldiers returned fire but the Arab managed to escape. In addition, one Hevron resident was lightly wounded in a stone throwing attack last night. In response to Friday night’s shooting the Hevron Regional Council says that the attack proves that “security for Israeli lives must remain only in the hands of the IDF.” The council notes that it was only a week ago that Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer was planning on withdrawing troops from the hills surrounding the Jewish community in Hevron, because the situation was “quiet enough” to warrant a withdrawal.
