The school year appears in danger of not beginning on time this Sunday, as the Teachers Union has announced a strike in protest of several issues. These include the firing of over 700 teachers, a 6% cut in total school hours, and a reduction in hours for 3,000 teachers. The Education Ministry says it was forced to make the cuts because of the harsh budget cuts.
Contrary to popular perception, this is only the second time in at least the past seven years that a strike mars the opening of the school year. In 1997, 1999, and 2001, and in other years to a lesser extent, the teachers threatened to strike, but in the end did not do so.
