Ninety-five members of the Bnei Menashe arrived in Israel today as new immigrants. Members of the group, who have been living in northeastern India for hundreds of years, consider themselves the descendants of the Biblical tribe of Menashe. The group has been practicing Jewish customs, such as circumcision on the eighth day after birth and Sabbath observance, for generations. Once in Israel they will study Judaism, undergo formal conversion by the Chief Rabbinate, and live observant Jewish lifestyles. They will be joining the more than 600 Bnei Menashe members already living in Israel. Twenty of them arrived today in Beit El, joining some ten families who preceded them in the north-of-Jerusalem town several years ago.
