(Updated Thursday 10 AM) German custom officials yesterday intercepted an Israeli ship containing military equipment believed to be headed for Iran. An Israeli arms company owned by Netanya resident Avichai Weinstein had purchased the cargo. Weinstein’s group then sold the goods to German company who according to officials intended to send the cargo to the Muslim nation. Weinstein says that he was unaware that Iran was the final destination of the shipment. He claims that the goods were destined for Thailand. Israel radio reported this morning that the Defense Ministry has filed a complaint with the police against Weinstein. Weinstein is related to Israeli Eli Cohen, who three years ago was also suspected of trying to sell military parts to Iran. Cohen was never indicted.
