New details emerged in an AP report on the killing of senior al-Qaida official Mohammed al-Masri, the terror group's number 2, in Tehran earlier this year.
According to the report, the assassination was the result of a joint effort between Israel and the US. US intel provided information on the al-Masri's whereabouts, while the Israeli spy organization Mossad carried out the killing, according to officials cited by AP.
Al-Masri was shot in an Tehran alley on August 7, on the anniversary of the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam.
Two officials cited in the report said the Mossad unit responsible for the operation was "Kidon," meaning "tip of the spear."
Al-Masri's daughter Maryam, the daughter in law of Osama bin Laden, was also targeted in the operation. The US believed she was involved in operational planning and was being trained for a leadership role in the terror group.
Al-Masri’s death was reported under a different name by Iranian media on Aug. 8, according to AP. Those reports said he had been killed by motorcycle gunmen along with his daughter.
