(Updated Tuesday 10 AM) US Vice President Dick Cheney feels that now is the time to end the evil regime of Saddam Hussein. Addressing the opening session of the US National Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Nashville,Tennessee last night, Cheney said that while some say the US should wait until Hussein is actually in possession of nuclear weapons before action is taken, “that logic seems to me to be deeply flawed… that argument counsels a course of inaction that itself could have devastating consequences for many countries, including our own.”

Cheney said that he disagrees with critics who feel that an attack on Iraq would interfere with the US’s overall war on terror: “Regime change in Iraq would bring about a number of benefits for the region. When the gravest of threats are eliminated, the freedom loving peoples of the region will have a chance to promote the values that can bring lasting peace.”

In addition, Cheney said that while there is no doubt that Iraq is in possession of weapons of mass destruction including biological and chemical weapons, a nuclear-armed Hussein would be a threat to the entire world. In the same breath, Cheney credited Israel for causing a setback in Iraq’s nuclear program by bombing the Osirik reactor in 1981.
