A 20-year-old man was killed last night (Saturday) in a car accident on Abba Hushi Boulevard in Haifa, near the university, at the end of a police chase.
Five residents of Basmat Tivon were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the incident, four young people in their 20s and a 17-year-old boy. A decision on extending their remand will be made later tonight.
The incident began when a police car spotted a vehicle driving wildly near Damon Junction, in the opposite direction of traffic. During the chase, the driver of the vehicle tried to evade a police checkpoint, but hit a light pole and caught fire.
The other occupants of the vehicle managed to escape, but the young man apparently got stuck under the wheels and rescue efforts involving three fire crews and a rescue vehicle were unsuccessful.
