(Updated Monday 9:30 AM) A Jewish Agency For Israel (JAFI) delegation arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa to take part in the World Summit on Sustainable Development, which gets underway this morning. The delegation, which includes over one-hundred Israeli students belonging to the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS), is prepared to defend the Jewish State should the summit be diverted into expressions of anti-Israel (or anti-Semitic) sentiment. Last year’s Durban Conference on Racism served as a stage for Pro-Arab and other groups to lambaste Israel and the Jewish people. Both the US and Israeli delegations dropped out of that event in mid-session.
Around 65,000 people from countries around the world are expected to attend the Johannesburg summit, which will last until September 4. Israeli political leaders will make appearances at the gathering, including Foreign Minister Shimon Peres.
