A foreign resident who married in Israel and afterwards divorced will no longer retain his status of citizen or resident. So ruled the Supreme Court yesterday, adopting the position of the Interior Ministry. Chief Justice Aharon Barak, in rejecting the petition of a foreigner who married an Israeli and then divorced her, said that only if the couple had children or similar situations could the man demand citizenship. Many Arabs from the PA autonomous areas had availed themselves of this now-filled loophole to obtain Israeli citizenship.
A nine-judge forum of the Supreme Court, including Chief Justice Aharon Barak, will hear petitions next week regarding the army's desire to deport to Gaza three siblings of Palestinian suicide terrorists. Brigitte Kessler of Eli, whose 19-year-old daughter Gila Sarah was one of seven people killed in a recent terrorist massacre at Jerusalem's French Hill junction, has asked to join the case in favor of deporting terrorist family members. "They claim that it's not humane or ethical to deport them to Gaza," she said. "But the army says that it's a great deterrent, and that is has proven itself as such. I must do everything I can to try to show that this is true, to try to ensure that there be no more victims like my daughter." The Court will respond to Brigitte's request on Monday.
