The global death toll from the coronavirus has surpassed one million, according to one source

As of Sunday, Worldometer, which calculates the totals from sources including governments, had recorded 1,000,027 deaths from the coronavirus. Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, which also tracks global coronavirus statistics, put the total deaths slightly lower at 995,190.

Worldwide coronavirus cases stand at about 33 million.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the number of verified cases in 21 US states has risen 10 percent in just one week.

For the first time since June, the number of infections per day in New York has crossed the 1,000 mark. Channel 12 News reported that health officials in New York are particularly concerned about the Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods where the proportion of patients is highest.

Dr. Chris Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at Washington University, told CNN: "The US is likely to see an 'explosion' of infected in the fall and winter as citizens spend more time in their homes and take less precautions."

Murray warned that the US could see deaths balloon from about 730 today to about 3,000 a day by December.
