Deputy Infrastructures Minister Naomi Blumental (Likud) promised today that her ministry would do what it takes to ensure that gas stations would not run out of fuel. The Pi Gelilot fuel depot strike is now concluding its seventh day, and the gas shortages at pumps in Jerusalem and in southern Israel are expected to soon hit other areas as well. Egged and Dan Bus Company officials reported this afternoon that they have enough gas only for 2-3 days.
No end to the strike appears in sight, as talks held late last night between Pi Gelilot management and employees failed to make progress. The strikers are protesting new Infrastructure Ministry regulations and price cuts that are pushing management to fire workers, as well as plans to close two of Pi Gelilot's four terminals. The Cabinet discussed the crisis today, and further talks are scheduled for today. Pi Gelilot workers have also blocked the entry of gas company employees to their offices at the fuel depot, because some of the gas companies have bypassed the strikers by obtaining gas directly from other fuel depots.
