Stephen Cooper, the man photographed escaping from the Twin Tower buildings as they collapsed on September 11, 2001, has died at the age of 78 reportedly after being infected with coronavirus.

Channel 12 News says Cooper was reported to have contracted COVID-19 in early March and his health deteriorated until he passed away.

The iconic photo, taken by an Associated Press photographer, has been circulated in newspapers and media outlets around the world and is also on display at the Memorial Museum for the Twin Tower Attacks.
