The Israeli government will deliberate Monday on a series of new restrictions proposed by the Health Ministry, in a bid to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

The Knesset’s Coronavirus Committee approved Sunday afternoon limits drafted by the government last Friday, restricting the number of people permitted at any public gathering, including prayer services in synagogues, weddings, or any event held in a rented event hall. In addition, bars are now also limited to 50 customers at any given time.

Following the approval of the new restrictions, which are set to go into effect Monday morning at 8:00 a.m., the government now plans to review additional regulations proposed by the Health Ministry, further restricting public activity.

The proposed measures include the closure of public parks, the closure of beaches, as well as limiting the number of diners permitted at a restaurant at any given time to 20. While the Health Ministry backs comprehensive closures of beaches and parks, according to Channel 12, the government will also weigh alternative plans, including the possibility of limiting the number of people at beaches and parks.

In addition, the government is expected to deliberate on a proposal to split up children at summer school to smaller groups of no more than 15 kids each – a move which is opposed by Education Minister Yoav Galant (Likud).

Furthermore, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has decided Sunday to select a new coronavirus czar, after the position was abolished following the end of the first wave of the coronavirus.
