Today, August 12, is the 56th birthday of Israeli captive Elchanan Tenenbaum, who was kidnapped by Hizbullah while on a business trip in Europe almost two years ago. His family is hoping that the Red Cross will help deliver him their birthday presents. His son Ori and daughter Keren have written their father a letter, and the family has also prepared a model house made of marzipan, which they will give to Red Cross officials today with a request to try to relay them to Tenenbaum. "The marzipan house is to remind our father that despite the terrible place where he is being held against his will, there is a warm home waiting for him here," Ori told the Jerusalem Post yesterday.
Negotiations with Hizbullah over a prisoner exchange have not yet been successful, despite various reports of progress in the foreign press. Hizbullah has also refused repeated requests by Red Cross officials to visit Tenenbaum, although one parcel containing medication sent by Ori in the past was accepted by the terrorists. Greetings and well-wishes can be sent to "tannenbaum@mia.org.il".
