Ben & Jerry’s has joined a growing list of companies boycotting Facebook, calling on the social media giant to impose strict censorship measures to remove what campaign organizers claim is hateful content.

The company tweeted that it “will pause all paid advertising on Facebook and Instagram in the US,” joining the Stop Hate For Profit campaign.

Ben & Jerry’s said the company is endorsing the campaign and "all those calling for Facebook to take stronger action to stop its platforms from being used to divide our nation, suppress voters, foment and fan the flames of racism and violence, and undermine our democracy."

Mozilla, which produces the open-source Firefox internet browser also joined the campaign this week.

Last week, the Stop Hate For Profit campaign was launched as a joint effort by a number of lobby groups, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Color Of Change, and the Anti-Defamation League.

The campaign has demanded that Facebook and Instagram impose strict measures to bar content deemed to be “hateful”, “racist”, “violent”, or “verifiably false”.

Critics of online censorship have condemned social media networks like Facebook for censorship measures already imposed, claiming they unfairly target conservatives, with violent, racist, or hateful content posted by left-wing activists often ignored.
