31-year-old Yafit Herenstein, mother of two little girls - 2.5 years and four months old - was murdered in an attack last night by an Arab terrorist in the Jordan Valley community of Mechora. Her husband remains in serious condition in an intensive care unit in Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital.
The murderer penetrated the town's western electronic security fence into the town just after 10 PM. He shot Yafit's husband Arno outside his house, and then shot and killed Yafit, who came out of the house when she heard the shots. Another Mechora resident was also seriously injured before the commander of the community’s Hareidi Nachal infantry unit arrived and shot the terrorist dead. Security officials praised the quick response of the military unit for preventing an even greater tragedy. Yasser Arafat’s Fatah terrorist organization took responsibility for the attack.
Jerusalem resident Daphne Shpruch, 62, who was wounded in the July 31 terrorist bombing in the Hebrew University cafeteria, succumbed to her wounds yesterday. Mrs. Shpruch, a mother of three and a university employee, was buried at the Har HaMenuchot cemetery in Jerusalem late this afternoon. Her death was the eighth in the Hebrew University attack; five of the victims were American citizens. Eleven of the wounded remain in Jerusalem hospitals, with three in serious condition.
