German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Wednesday that the EU supports the two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian Arab conflict and rejects any plans by Israel to apply sovereignty over Judea and Samaria.
Maas made the remarks at a joint press conference with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi in Jordan's capital Amman and was quoted by the Xinhua news agency.
"We are worried about the repercussions of the (Israeli) annexation decision," he said, adding the priority is "to bring the two sides to the negotiating table."
Safadi warned that any Israeli annexation of Judea and Samaria, which he said is “a flagrant violation of international law”, may lead to “institutionalized apartheid in Palestine.”
"Jordan will continue working with international partners to prevent the annexation and save the region from drowning in further conflict," he warned.
Maas’ visit to Jordan followed a quick stop in Israel, where he met with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Alternate Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi.
The focal point of the talks was Israel's proposed application of Israeli law over the Jordan Valley and Israeli towns in Judea and Samaria, with initial steps slated to begin from July 1, the same day Germany takes the rotating European Union presidency.
The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, recently made clear that the EU will not accept an Israeli move to apply sovereignty over parts of Judea and Samaria.
Jordan, for its part, has also warned against an Israeli sovereignty move. Jordanian Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz recently threatened that the kingdom would review its relationship with Israel if the Jewish state goes ahead with the sovereignty move.
Safadi last week said that sovereignty would be a blatant violation of international law and would have a dire effect on Jordanian-Israeli relations.
The Jordanian Foreign Minister has been holding talks with counterparts in which he has warned against Israel’s intentions to apply sovereignty over parts of Judea and Samaria.
