On May 12, in the middle of the night, the Golani Patrol Battalion carried out an operation in the Palestinian village Ya’abed in Samaria. During the operation, a terrorist hurled a rock from one of the rooftops on the fighters. The rock hit the head of soldier Amit Ben Yigal, who was mortally injured. He was evacuated to the Rambam hospital in Haifa, where he was pronounced dead.
A day after Amit’s death, his father Baruch Ben Yigal gave several interviews to the media that didn’t leave a dry eye. He related that even though Amit was his only son, and therefore was exempt from serving in combat, he asked his father to allow him to join a combat battalion. Baruch explained that his son made this request in the middle of a trip to Poland with his classmates which Amit took in twelfth grade. As mentioned, Amit was an only child.
Now, three weeks after Amit was killed in action, his father decided to leave behind one last remembrance of his son: together with Hidabroot, a Torah scroll is now being written in Amit’s memory. Rabbis and senior public officials from all sectors have so far written a letter in it. The goal is to complete the Torah scroll this coming Thursday, which is the thirtieth day (the shloshim) to Amit’s falling in action.

This idea of a Torah scroll written in memory of my son has deeply touched us. Many great rabbis and scholars are participating in this special Torah scroll. We have no words to thank Hidabroot for doing this great thing for us.
“Please join us in writing the last letters of this Torah scroll in memory of my only son, Amit,” Baruch concludes.

The goal is to complete the Torah scroll next week, on the month’s anniversary of Ben Yigal’s death. The Torah scroll will have its home in the Tzivia Elyashiv yeshiva high school in Lod.

The Israeli Chief Rabbi, Rabbi David Lau, joining the project of writing a letter in the Torah scroll in memory of IDF soldier, Amit Ben Yigal, may God avenge him. He fell 3 weeks ago during a military operation in the Palestinian village of Ya’abed in Samaria, after a terrorist threw a rock from a rooftop that mortally injured him.
After Ben Yigal fell in action, Hidabroot organization decided to launch a special initiative to write a Torah scroll in his memory. It is being written together with Amit Ben Yigal’s father, Baruch, who touched Jews everywhere with the strength of character he displayed in interviews and the words he said after his son’s falling in action. The Torah scroll will be dedicated next week, a month after Amit’s passing, at the Tzivia Elyashiv yeshiva high school in Lod.
Amit was an only son to his parents. Even though his status as an only son exempted him from combat service, he decided to join a combat unit after visiting a death camp in Poland during a class trip in twelfth grade. That was the moment when he asked his father for permission to become a combat soldier.
Hidabroot calls on the public to join by writing a letter in a Torah scroll — at any price that you can. “After Amit Ben Yigal, a fearless fighter, gave up his life for the sake of the Jewish people, now is the time to return the little that is possible, and immortalize his name in a special Torah scroll written at the behest of Torah leaders in his memory.”
