According to a Dahaf poll released today, Haifa Mayor Maj.-Gen. (res.) Amram Mitzna would beat out incumbent Labor leader Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer and contender MK Chaim Ramon in an election for party leadership. The poll predicts that Mitzna would win 41%, Ben-Eliezer - 30%, and Ramon would trail in with 16%.

Amram Mitzna served in the IDF for 25 years, rising in rank until becoming Central Region Commander, in which position he served during the first intifada. His impressive support in the polls is reminiscent of that of former IDF Chief of Staff Amnon Lipkin-Shachak, also a new face on the national political scene when he entered the 1999 election race. He was very popular in the polls at first, but gradually lost support as he was forced to deal with the day-to-day challenges of national politics.
