In April of this year, 405 car accidents were reported. 18 of these featured fatalities and 54 critical injuries. 608 people were injured overall, 21 of whom were killed and 65 seriously hurt.
In contrast, in April of last year, 987 road accidents with casualties were recorded, 25 of which were fatal and 154 involved serious bodily harm. 1,853 individuals were injured in these accidents, with 25 killed and 175 seriously injured.
In addition, in April of this year, 635 minor accidents resulting in 760 light injuries were reported to the police. In contrast, in April of 2019, 3,544 minor accidents were reported, with 4,752 individuals incurring minor injuries.
In January-April 2020, 86 people were killed in road accidents—a drop of 19.6% compared to the same interval of the previous year.
Serious injuries decreased by 35.9%, with 2,979 road accidents with fatalities taking place over this time period—a decrease of 30.4% compared to the corresponding period of last year.
The Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) attributed the discrepancy in traffic accidents and driving restrictions in March and April of this year relative to the last to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
