The names of 1,000 people who died of the coronavirus in the United States will appear on the front page of Sunday’s edition of the New York Times.

To date, nearly 100,000 people have died in the United States from the coronavirus, with 1,127 deaths being recorded in the last 24 hours alone.

The number of cases of coronavirus in the US is more than 1.6 million. The number of patients who have recovered from the virus is about 334,000.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump said he has deemed houses of worship such as synagogues to be "essential" and called on governors across the country to allow them to reopen this weekend.

"Today I'm identifying houses of worship -- churches, synagogues and mosques -- as essential places that provide essential services," he said during a press conference at the White House.

Trump added that if governors do not abide by his request, he will "override" them, though it's unclear what authority he has to do so.

Meanwhile, a number of media outlets cited new studies saying that hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug that Trump has been taking to avoid becoming infected with the coronavirus, has caused negative side effects, including irregular heartbeats, in patients.

The observational study, published in The Lancet, involved 96,000 COVID-19 carriers, nearly 15,000 of whom were given the drug or a related medicine, claimed that it hurt patients' chances of recovering from the virus.

Researchers said they believed the risk of death was significantly higher for individuals taking the drug. The World Health Organization (WHO) joined a chorus of attacks on the prospective cure, saying no clinical trials had recommended its use.
