Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and others reacted with anger during yesterday's weekly cabinet meeting to the latest moves of the radical left-wing Gush Shalom organization. Gush Shalom, or Peace Bloc, announced that it was accumulating evidence against IDF officers to submit to the World Court in The Hague - and sent warning letters to this effect to many of the officers.
Sharon angrily called for legal action against the organization, adding that no democracy in the world would tolerate subversive activities during a time of war. Attorney-General Elyakim Rubenstein said that though he has investigated similar left-wing activities in the past, he would do so again at Sharon's request. Ministers Ruby Rivlin, Limor Livnat and Danny Naveh called Gush Shalom's actions "traitorous," saying that they are considerably more serious that a refusal to serve in the army in Yesha areas.
Even former Peace Now leader MK Mossi Raz (Meretz) condemned Gush Shalom's latest move, calling it "tasteless and irrelevant." Israel's largest newspaper, Yediot Acharonot, had sharp words for Gush Shalom today, saying that its threatening letters to IDF officers are “ugly, infuriating and stupid,” and “a wicked initiative.”
