39 Israeli children of Ethiopian decent, from the Jewish Agency Absorption Center in Tzfat (Safed), will be Bar/Bat Mitzvahed at a special communal celebration at Jerusalem’s Great Synagogue, on Thursday. Two British families, the Gould family of Manchester and the Abrams family of Liverpool whose sons Ilan and Bobby will also be “Bar Mitzvahed” at the ceremony, are underwriting the event. Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau will address the children following morning prayers. In addition, the boys will be given a talit (prayer shawl) and tefillin (phylacteries) as gifts, while girls will receive candlesticks.
Following a festive luncheon at the synagogue, the youngsters and their families, will travel to the Haas Promenade for an overview of the city and then to the Kotel (Western Wall), for dancing and singing. The Jewish Agency for Israel and the United Jewish Israel Appeal is organizing the event.
