(Updated Sunday 11 AM) The chief Rabbi of the northern town of Tzfat (Safed), Rabbi Levi Bistritzky has died of heart failure at the age of 53. He was hospitalized several days ago after suffering a heart attack.
Bistritzky arrived in Israel thirty-six years ago under the auspices of the Chabad Lubavitch movement. The head of the Tzfat Religious Council, Rabbi Shlomo Chadad, told Arutz 7 today that Rabbi Bistritzky was highly respected by the people of Tzfat and was very active in community events.
Rabbi Bistritzky was also involved in a rabbinical organization called “Pikuach Nefesh” (Saving One’s Soul/Life), which actively opposed the Oslo Accords, The Wye River Agreement, and the 2000 Camp David talks.
