Prime Minister Sharon met today with Finance Minister Silvan Shalom and National Infrastructures Minister Avigdor Lieberman, and instructed them to take immediate action to establish a new desalination facility. Scheduled to be built by the Mekorot Water Authority in the port city of Ashdod, it will be designed to desalinate 45 million cubic meters of ocean water a year. Construction of this first large-scale desalination plant in Israel will take two years.
Today\'s meeting also featured the approval of a privately-funded plan to drill up to 30 million cubic meters of water over the next 18 months from 600-900 meters below the ground.
