Minister of Industry and Trade Dalia Itzik (Labor) succeeded in negotiating a deal last night bringing the nationwide flour strike to an end. Bakeries and flour consumers will now pay an additional 13.8% for flour, the price of which is government-controlled. Consumers of regular bread, however, will not have to pay more for their daily fare, and the price of a standard loaf of will remain fixed at NIS 2.60. Other types of bread, such as sliced white and rye bread and especially fancy breads, will cost more. Challah for Shabbat, for instance, will now cost 2.95.

The country’s bread production lines came to a standstill at the end of last week after flourmill operators went on strike. They were protesting their increasing losses due to more expensive wheat imports, interest rates, and electricity.
