Another train-track bomb this morning - the second in three weeks - caused acute injuries to the conductor. The five-kilogram explosive was detonated, apparently by remote-control, on tracks in the Rehovot-Yavneh area as the train passed by. No one else was hurt, though one passenger was treated for shock, and the train was not derailed.
The wounded conductor was unconscious for two hours, but afterwards said he would continue to drive the train after his recovery despite the recent attempts to terrorize train service. A similar attack occurred near Lod on June 30, when three train passengers were lightly injured. It is suspected that the same terror cell is responsible for both bombs.
The Transportation Ministry announced that a special allocation of 11 million shekels was transferred to Israel Railways to bolster train security. Another budget increase of 8 million shekels for upgrading security at stations and along the tracks was also approved.
