Vandals hit the Jewish section of a historic cemetery in Rome last week, smashing headstones, toppling columns and overturning earth. Nearly 40 graves in the Verano Cemetery were damaged. This is apparently the first manifestation of anti-Semitic violence in Italy since the beginning of the recent wave of such attacks in several European countries. Italian officials expressed sympathy and indignation. Only about 35,000 out of the nearly 60 million people in Italy are Jews.
