One family was wiped out, and another family living on the same street was decimated, in two car accidents in the same area late yesterday afternoon.
The double disaster began when the Knafu family of Kiryat Shmonah - Moti, 28, his wife Liat, 25, and their 21-month-old son Dor - was driving northwards halfway between Kiryat Shmonah and the Kinneret Sea. A driver coming from the opposite direction apparently dozed off at the wheel and rammed into the Knafu family car, killing the three instantly. Moti leaves his parents and four siblings, while Liat is survived by her parents. The lethal driver and his daughter were injured.
The fatal accident was followed only 40 minutes later by another deadly crash about 200 meters away. A truck driver traveling fast could not brake in time and hit the car in front of him carrying Claude Ohanona, 53, his wife Ruti, 50, and their daughter Hadas, 13. The latter two were killed, and Claude is hospitalized with serious head injuries. The family has five other children. The Knafu family moved into an apartment at 74 Herzl St. in Kiryat Shmonah only three months ago, and the Ohanona family lives down the street at #24.
