(July 18, 2002 – 00:05) At about 10:15pm, two suicide bombers wearing explosive belts containing about 15 kilograms of explosives detonated the powerful bombs on Solomon Street, in the southern Tel Aviv neighborhood of N\'vei Sha\'anan. The blast occurred near the Central Theater, a movie theater frequented by foreign laborers. There were many persons in the area of the theater and a nearby caf? when the bombs were detonated.



Tel Aviv district police have confirmed that three persons were murdered and about 40 wounded in the attack, mostly foreign laborers. Police have discounted earlier reports of a larger number of fatalities.



Hospital officials confirm the victims were showered in a large quantity of shrapnel and nails that were contained in the bombs. The victims were transported to Ichilov, Tel HaShomer, Wolfson, and Beilinson Hospitals. Hospitals are encountering difficulty in communicating with the many foreigners who are from several countries. At 11:45pm, Israel Radio aired an update on the attack in Romanian to assist the many Romanian laborers in Israel.



Police reported following the double bombing they did not have specific intelligence warnings pointing to a planned attack in southern Tel Aviv. Following the attack, Gush Dan area police were move to heightened preparedness status.



Via an anonymous telephone call to Hizbullah el-Manara TV, the Islamic Jihad terror organization claimed responsibility for the attack.
