(Updated Wednesday 9:30 AM) Police yesterday, operating under the orders of Minister of Internal Security Uzi Landau, shut down the Jerusalem office of Sari Nusseibeh. Nusseibeh has been serving as PA-leader Yasser Arafat’s representative in Jerusalem. Minister Landau explained that Nusseibeh’s office was serving as a front for illegal PA activity in the capital.
Similar actions were taken against The PA’s headquarters in Jerusalem, known as the Orient House, following the Sbarro pizzeria suicide bombing last August that claimed the lives of 15 Israelis.
US Ambassador to Israel, Daniel Kurtzer, questioned Israel’s decision to close Nusseibeh’s office, since some view the PA representative as a pragmatic moderate. This despite a recent report by The Media Line’s Michael Widlanski, which states that during the 1991 Gulf War, Nusseibeh was caught contacting Iraqi intelligence officials in order to help direct the SCUD rocket attacks on Israel.
