The Cabinet yesterday approved the establishment of new towns in the Galilee that would be open to settlement by Jewish citizens only. Seventeen ministers voted in favor of the plan, which bypasses a Supreme Court decision ruling that such towns are illegal.
Proponents of the bill, sponsored by MK Rabbi Chaim Druckman (National Religious Party), explain that the establishment of “Jewish only” towns advance Zionism and help maintain the continuity of a “Jewish” state.
Two ministers opposed the plan including Minister Dan Meridor (Center Party). Meridor told Israel radio this morning that it was absurd to think that a Jew who did not serve in the IDF may live in such a community while a Druze brigadier-general may not.
