Two people were killed and four were wounded on Tuesday in a shooting on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, CNN reported, citing the Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Service Agency.

Two of the victims are being treated for life-threatening injuries, and two more people have non-life threatening injuries, the agency said.

A city official said that the suspected shooter is in custody.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are unclear.

Law enforcement officers were sweeping the affected buildings, the university tweeted.

"Campus lockdown continues. Remain in a safe location. Monitor email and UNCC homepage,” tweeted the university, which has 30,000 students.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are assisting university police in the case, reported CNN.
