The Extreme left-wing Meretz party has filed a “no-confidence” motion against Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s government. Meretz says that the motion was filed because of the “economic failures” of the government.
At the same time, the Labor Party convention kicked off last night with members pressuring party chairman Binyamin Ben-Eliezer to pull his party out of the government. Party members have begun collecting signatures of those who are in favor of leaving Sharon’s coalition.
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres addressed the delegates at last night’s convention. Peres said that the Labor Party was in no way “dead”. He also said that Israel must seek a new partner on the Palestinian side in order to enter into diplomatic talks
