Israeli politicians on Thursday condemned the desecration of the tombstone of Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit's father.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu asked Interior Minister Gilad Erdan to order an investigation into the incident.
Netanyahu said the vandalism was "a shocking act that must be condemned."
President Reuven Rivlin also condemned the vandalism, saying, "The desecration of the grave of the Attorney General's father is a disgusting act."
Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked strongly condemned the vandalism as well.
"This is a disgusting act that contradicts basic moral values. I regret that there are those who do not loathe such despicable measures to achieve their goals. Without a doubt a red line was crossed here, and I expect the Israel Police to bring those responsible to justice as soon as possible," she said.
Erdan called the vandalism “a despicable act by despicable people” and added, “I instructed the Israel Police to do everything possible to find the criminals who committed the act and to bring them to justice. I expect the political leadership to unite in condemning this act, which crosses a red line, and not try to use it for political purposes.”
MK David Bitan (Likud) said, "The desecration of the grave of the father of the Attorney General is a despicable act and I strongly condemn it. This is crossing a red line and I hope the police will find the perpetrators quickly. Any attempt to exploit this shocking incident for political purposes should be condemned."
Education Minister Naftali Bennett (Jewish Home) responded to the desecration of the grave and said, "The desecration of the tombstone of the Attorney General's father is a terrible act that crosses red lines. It is forbidden for the Israeli discourse to reach violent areas. Avichai Mandelblit is a straight, professional and dedicated public servant. I'm sure the police will do everything to find the culprits and bring them to justice.”
The desecration of the grave of Mandelblit's father, Baruch Mandelblit, took place last week, Hadashot TV reported.
According to the report, Mandelblit discovered the vandalism at his mother's memorial and reported it to the police. No other graves near his father's were damaged.
Mandelblit told investigators he had no idea why anyone would seek to vandalize his father's grave.
