Police questioned Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's wife Sara for two hours on Friday over new suspicions of fraudulently misusing public funds.

The Prime Minister’s wife is suspected of deceiving the State Comptroller and presenting him with fictitious receipts.

She is reportedly suspected of fraudulently creating the appearance that she was paying media adviser Nir Hefetz for his services to the family, after the Prime Minister’s personal lawyer was informed by State Comptroller Yosef Shapira that the Netanyahu could not retain Hefetz’s services without paying him at a market rate.

Hefetz has since turned state’s evidence against Netanyahu in “Case 4000”, which centers on suspicions that a Netanyahu aide provided chief Bezeq shareholder Shaul Elovitch with regulatory benefits in exchange for sympathetic coverage to the prime minister and his wife on the Walla! news website, which is owned by Elovitch as well.

In a statement after Sara Netanyahu’s interrogation on Friday, her lawyer Yossi Cohen said, "As expected, at the end of the investigation it will turn out that this is another bunch of lies and stories told by state witness Nir Hefetz and which have no substance. When the other cases crumble, they invent new lies. How much longer will the persecution of the Netanyahu family continue?”
