At least fourteen people were murdered this morning, and over forty were wounded when an Arab suicide bomber detonated a powerful bomb aboard a crowded bus, in the southern Jerusalem neighborhood of Pat at around 8 AM, during the heart of the rush hour commute. Among the wounded, were children traveling to school. The injured were taken to area hospitals. Several of those wounded are listed in serious condition.
The bus, Egged number 32A, had just left the Gilo section of the capital, heading towards the Central Bus Station, when it exploded. The bomb blew the sides and roof off the bus and reduced the remainder of the vehicle to a skeleton of charred metal.
Mr. Eric Davis was playing tennis at the nearby Israel Tennis Center when the bomb exploded. “I heard a large boom and saw a cloud of smoke start to fill the sky and then a few minutes later, we heard the ambulances… How many people’s lives have changed since eight o’clock this morning? - families losing kids, losing parents - its just terrible!”
Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer had warned, following Sunday’s cabinet meeting, that five Arab suicide bombers had been dispatched throughout the country. Last night police in Jerusalem, as well as in Haifa, were placed on the highest state of alert, following specific intelligence warnings indicating that an attack was planned for either or both of those cities.
Yesterday, an Arab suicide bomber detonated his explosives alongside border police near Kibbutz Bachan, north of Tul Karem, killing only himself.
