Maj.-Gen. (res.) Oren Shachor continues to insist that Israel has no choice but to take over and remain in PA-controlled areas. \"I\'ve been saying this for a while,\" he told Arutz-7 this morning. \"This is the only way to prevent the sprouting up of a new terrorist infrastructure. It is especially easy for them to prepare suicide attacks [if we are not there]; it\'s obvious that this is so. The entire concept of having such a thing as Area A (areas under PA control) is valid only when the PA is doing everything it can to stop terrorism. But since this is not the case, [this arrangement is no longer applicable and] we must return our forces to those areas.\"
Shachor said he was not concerned about international disapproval of such a move: \"I\'m sure we can convince the U.S. of its importance, and even if we can\'t convince the Europeans, they will have complaints against us in any event, so it doesn\'t matter. We have to worry first and foremost about our own security.\"
Shachor served as head of the Civil Administration in Yesha in the early-to-mid 1990\'s. Then-PM Netanyahu suspended him from the Israeli negotiating team with the PLO after it was discovered that he had systematically leaked to opposition head Shimon Peres details of the negotiations. Shachor explained to Arutz-7 last year that he changed his mind about Oslo when it became clear that the PA was no longer interested in negotiations.
