Prime Minister Sharon and Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer met this morning for a last-minute attempt to find a compromise on a last-minute dispute that arose over the planned budget cuts, but it is not clear whether the scheduled Knesset vote will be held today as planned. Yesterday, it emerged that many Labor MKs, led by internal-opposition leader Chaim Ramon, object to a differentiation between army veterans and non-army veterans - i.e., Jews and Arabs, for the most part - in child allowances. The Likud, however, insists that the allowances be cut 4% for army veterans, and 24% for others. This differentiation was in effect until about ten years ago.
