Former Minister Yossi Beilin, still a member of the Labor Party, announced last night that he was forming a new left-wing movement named Shachar (Dawn; an acronym for the Hebrew words peace, education, and welfare). Oslo-architect Beilin sharply attacked the Labor Party, and expressed the hope that his movement would include Meretz, as well as other left-wing Knesset Members, including from Labor. Meretz leader MK Yossi Sarid reacted coldly to the offer, saying he sees Beilin as an \"important ally,\" but noting that he has not yet officially left the Labor Party. This morning, Beilin said that he would definitely quit Labor if Binyamin Ben-Eliezer is not replaced as party leader.

MK Yuri Stern, chairman of the National Union-Yisrael Beiteinu Knesset faction, notes with disgust the deep European involvement in internal Israeli politics. “Beilin, who is financed by pro-Palestinian European elements,\" Stern told Arutz-7 this morning, \"has turned himself into a foreign agent acting against the critical interests of the state of Israel. Beilin has not denied that he receives funds from the European Union. Stern said that the Knesset is set to vote on a bill, proposed by MK Uri Ariel, that would outlaw the receipt of funds from foreign states. “Thus,” Stern said, “the gross interference of the European Union and others in the internal affairs of the state of Israel would be halted - and Beilin’s subversion would end.\"

Investigative journalist David Bedein says that Beilin\'s foundation, known as the Economic Cooperation Foundation, has failed to turn over to the Interior Ministry its financial records for the year 2000. Bedein, Bureau Chief of Israel Resource News Agency, told Arutz-7\'s Josh Hasten today that for a non-profit organization to refuse to disclose its financial transactions is a felony, and that therefore \"it is the responsibility of the Interior Ministry to have Beilin arrested immediately.\" Regarding the EU funding of Beilin\'s foundation, Bedein asks, \"Is it appropriate for Yossi Beilin to be on the payroll of foreign governments while he is an active Israeli politician and possibly a future Israeli public official?\" Bedein will reveal his findings regarding Beilin\'s foundation in an article to appear in this Friday\'s Makor Rishon newspaper.
