CIA Director George Tenet, who arrived in the Middle East yesterday to advance plans for reform in the Palestinian Authority, will meet with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon this evening. Tenet met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak yesterday in Cairo and with Jordanian leaders in Jordan. Sharon will likely explain to Tenet why he believes that reforms in the PA are meaningless as long as Yasser Arafat remains in the picture. Tenet hopes to persuade Arafat to fight Palestinian terrorism and to unite all his security organs.
Sharon met with European Union International Policy Chief Javier Solana last night. Solana is pushing for a Middle East regional peace conference in the near future. Syria has declared its opposition to the plan. US Undersecretary of State William Burns is also in the region, shuttling between Israeli and Arab leaders.
