It\'s been a full month since the deaf began their public protests, and they marked the occasion with a stormy demonstration this morning outside the Knesset. The negotiations between their representatives and the Finance Ministry are stuck, even though some feel that the dispute involves only \"small sums.\" The deaf currently receive a \"communications allowance\" for equipment such as a videophone and flashing doorbells - a total of 290 shekels a month. They are asking, however, to be recognized as \"disabled,\" rendering them eligible for a monthly allotment of 380 shekels. The 10,000-strong community is also asking for financial help in replacing their hearing aids. Each set costs 10,000 shekels and must be replaced every three years. The Treasury is willing to give 1,500 shekels, but the deaf feel this is insufficient. \"We are not asking for gifts,\" said one deaf protestor, \"but rather just the ability to integrate into the rest of society.\"
