Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson on Saturday underwent emergency surgery for a brain hemorrhage.

Ferguson, 76, led Manchester United between 1986-2013.

A statement from the club read, "Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain hemorrhage. The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimize his recovery. His family request privacy in this matter."

They also said players were informed of Ferguson's condition before the information was made public.

Ferguson's son Darren, who manages the Doncaster Rovers, missed the season's final game to be at his father's side.
