One person was killed, another seriously injured, and two others were lightly injured when a car exploded this afternoon while traveling on Route 40 near the Elishama interchange in Kfar Saba.

An MDA team treated the seriously injured man of about 30, who is now being evacuated to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva suffering from burns and injuries to the extremities. He is under sedation and assisted breathing.

Another man was found inside the vehicle with no signs of life and the MDA teams were forced to declare his death.

The other two wounded, who were traveling in a vehicle near the exploded vehicle, were evacuated to Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba.

MDA paramedics Idan Shina and Tomer Fine said, "When we got to the scene, we saw a vehicle on fire on the left lane at the intersection. A man of about 30 was lying unconscious, suffering from burns and injuries. Another man was found inside the car with no signs of life, and we were forced to determine his death on the spot. A 30-year-old woman from a nearby car who had a panic attack was evacuated to a hospital and another young man was treated there."

The background to the incident is still unclear. Massive police forces were called to the scene following the explosion.

Police report Route 40 closed to traffic. They direct travelers to Route 531. Travelers are asked not to approach the area.
