The Knesset plenum on Monday evening approved the second and third readings of a bill, initiated by Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, authorizing the Cabinet to order the start of a war.

"The law reflects the existing situation. In the era of social networks and the speed of media and the danger of leaks, we must adapt ourselves to the current political security outlook and make the government and cabinet work as efficient as possible," Shaked said after the bill was approved.

She added that "this is the purpose of the bill and it adapts the legislation to the reality that has existed for years."

MK Avi Dichter (Likud), who heads the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, clarified there was no direct connection between the approved legislation and the recent security tension.

"When you look at the reality in recent years, and it does not matter whether you are talking about the north or the south, we build deterrence in an informed manner,” he said.

"This bill is intended to provide a closed and definitive answer to the question of how a normal country wants to work according to law. Without flexibility there is no real ability to function," explained Dichter.
