The Chief Rabbi of Russia, Rabbi Berel Lazar, revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has a special fondness for matzot and that he eats them all year long.

Rabbi Lazar made the comments to reporters in the framework of the annual Limmud FSU Moscow event on Sunday, with more than 2,000 young Jews in attendance.

He elaborated and said that Putin eats matzah while drinking tea, and he likes the flavor very much.

"Putin told me that matzah is tasty, easy and it is the best healthy food to eat. He has plenty of it in his possession all year long, besides the matzah that I bring him for Passover.”

Rabbi Lazar also elaborated on Putin's involvement with the Jewish community in the country.

“We have at least two meetings with him during the year where we tell him all about our issues and problems that need solving. He knows all about the synagogues in different cities. Also, a lot of good things that are taking place in the community are thanks to Putin, for example the establishment of the Jewish Museum. He even contributed one of his salaries to this important project,” said Rabbi Lazar.
